Nittany Sports Now can confirm that Penn State football is losing a tight end to the transfer portal.
As first reported by Pete Nakos of On3Sports, Penn State tight end Jerry Cross plans to enter the portal after three seasons in Happy Valley.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to Penn State fans.
Cross appeared in seven of Penn State’s 38 games over the past three seasons. He never put up any stats.
IT STARTED WITH PROMISE
Cross came to Penn State as a blue-chip recruit. 247Sports rated him as the No. 15 tight end in the country from his class and the No. 5 overall player in Wisconsin.
Allen Trieu of 247 projected Cross as a Power Four starter.
“Not just tall, but a naturally big player all the way around,” Trieu wrote. “Has played out wide as a high school receiver and also through participating in 7-on-7, he has comfort running routes and catching the ball. Still has room to grow in some of those aspects as far as refinement. Wins with physical size and strength a lot in high school, but once he can add some craft to that, it could really enhance his physical skills. He has the strength to block but if he is going to put his hand down and be an attached tight end, he will have to get used to that. Lots of upside but still on the rawer side.”
A LOGJAM

During Cross’ freshman season at Penn State, the team had Brenton Strange (now with the Jaguars) Theo Johnson (now with the Giants) and Tyler Warren (now the best tight end in college football) all at tight end. The next season, Strange and Warren were still there. As was Khalil Dinkins. This season, Warren is the best tight end in the country with Dinkins still in the fold and former five-star Luke Reynolds playing a role as a true freshman.
In short, there wasn’t a path for Cross to get on the field at Penn State, and thus he plans to enter the transfer portal.
The portal officially opens Monday, Dec. 9.
