A Penn State wrestling starter was seen using crutches during Sunday’s dual meet against Wyoming at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Alex Facundo, a backup 157 and 165-pounder, is 5-0 on the young season. He appeared in the Drexel dual meet and is expected to appear on occasion behind Tyler Kasak and Mitchell Mesenbrink.
“He tweaked something,” PSU wrestling coach Cael Sanderson said. “It could be a few weeks to several weeks. I don’t think it’s any kind of surgery or anything, but he probably won’t be on the mat for a couple weeks.”
Facundo, who took an Olympic redshirt season last year, was a NCAA qualifier at 165 pounds for Penn State in 2022-23 season. He went 19-6 that year.
SUCCESS OF THE LIONS
Wrestling isn’t exactly on the minds of many Penn State fans this week. Yes, Penn State competes in the Journeymen Duals in Nashville Sunday but there are bigger events in other sports that Sanderson is just as excited about as most fans.
But as usual, the football team has most of the attention. Penn State will host a first-round College Football Playoff game with SMU on Saturday. Volleyball will also be playing a big game Thursday evening in the NCAA Final Four against Nebraska in Louisville.
Sanderson said all of the sports programs feed off each other’s success.
“It’s awesome. We’re all trying to build the same brand, and that’s Penn State,” Sanderson said. “And we know one another. We work together. We’re all problem-solving together. We see volleyball in here. We use the same weight room. We use the same Rec Hall. It’s a lot of fun to follow them and cheer for them. The athletic program is moving in the right direction with Pat Kraft, and we’re blessed.”
