Big Ten Media Days are underway in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium with the college football season only one month away, and as always, the Penn State boss spoke at the podium.
Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke to the media about the fanbase’s frustrations regarding the number of games Penn State wins each season.
“We are one of the few programs in the country who can win 10-11 games, and people aren’t happy,” Franklin said. “So we embrace that.”

PSU finished the 2023 season 10-3 with losses to Michigan, Ohio State and Ole Miss (2024 Peach Bowl), all prominent programs. The Michigan loss snapped any playoff hopes and observers are waiting for PSU to take the last step to being a national championship contender. Although Franklin is proud and embraces the consistent success level, fans are quick to acknowledge Franklin’s record against the best football programs.
Through his first 10 seasons at Penn State, Franklin is 88-39 overall but 3-17 against top-10 teams, 12-26 against ranked opponents and a combined 4-16 against Ohio State and Michigan. Franklin has won 10 games in five of his 10 seasons as head coach.
Penn State has never made the College Football Playoff and ranked as high as fifth in the 2016 final rankings. The College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams this season and presents a golden opportunity for Penn State to play in and possibly host its first playoff game.
PSU’s playoff prospects would dim should the team lose its season opener Week 1 at West Virginia. That game is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31, in Morgantown. It will be Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff Game of the Week.
