Penn State HC James Franklin Briefly Addresses KeAndre Lambert-Smith Transfer Portal Reports

University Park— Penn State reportedly could be without its leading receiver from last season for 2024.

Roughly 24 hours before this year’s Blue-White Game, reports surfaced that KeAndre Lambert-Smith could well be entering the transfer portal.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports first reported that Lambert-Smith was “strongly considering” entering the transfer portal.”

Pete Nakos of On3Sports then reportedthat Lambert-Smith was “expected to enter the transfer portal.”

Later on, Lambert-Smith offered a cryptic response to the reporters via Instagram.

Amid the reports, Lambert-Smith was still on a roster for Blue-White, slated to suit up for the White Team.

But he did not play, and afterward, coach James Franklin inevitably was asked about the situation.

“I’m really happy to talk about any of the guys that played today,” Franklin said in his post-spring game presser, “and who were in the locker room, but other than that, I don’t have much to tell you.”

Predictably, this quote doesn’t reveal much about Lambert-Smith’s future.

Zenitz reported that Lambert-Smith has “been away from the team this week and is strongly considering entering the transfer portal.”

The senior from Norfolk, Virginia led Penn State in receiving last season with 53 catches for 673 yards (12.7 yards/catch) and four touchdowns. In 2022, he 24 passes for 389 yards and four touchdowns.

Franklin spoke of Lambert-Smith’s progress earlier this spring.

I think (Lambert-Smith) had a good spring, he’s shown some real flashes this spring and I’m seeing them on a more consistent basis. We need him to have a big year and expect him to have a big year, and I’m seeing more consistency in the special plays and production.”

The transfer portal opens Monday and will remain open for a little more than a week.
