Blue Chip Safety Locks in Penn State Official Visit

This summer, Penn State will be getting an official visit from a four-star safety from Florida.

His name’s Rashad Johnson Jr.

Johnson (2025) is a 6-foot-2, 185-pounder from South Sumpter High School in BushNell, Florida.

He plans on taking his official visit to Penn State the weekend of June 7.

Penn State offered him last June. He also has offers from schools such as Alabama, Illinois, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and West Virginia.

Johnson, who also got snaps at receiver, helped South Sumpter to an 11-2 record in 2023 with a trip to the regional finals. According to MaxPreps, he ended the season with 59 tackles (6 TFL), 7 PBU, an INT, a FF and a sack. He ended the previous season with 51 tackles, five pass breakups and a pair of interceptions.

Johnson last visited Penn State last week, and spoke with Lions247 about his visit.

He appreciated the straightforward approach of head coach James Franklin.

“I met with the head coach, chopped it up with him and spent most of my day with coach Poindexter,” Johnson said. “He was just telling me don’t chase the logo, chase the opportunity. [Franklin] was the realest and gave out a lot of important information. His message was he’s going to be recruiting me heavy now and that he loved my film.”

Johnson also spoke highly of Penn State’s safeties coach, Anthony Poindexter.

Poindexter came to State College before the 2021 season. Since then, he’s helped develop players such as Jaquan Brisker and Ji’Ayir Brown, who are both starters in the NFL. Penn State also has a promising current crop of safeties that features KJ Winston, Jaylen Reed and Zane Wheatley.
