One of the greatest performers in Penn State wrestling is going to the Olympics.

Representing Mexico, Roman Bravo-Young qualified for the Olympics at 57 KG, beating Columbia’s Oscar Tigreros 14-4 in the semifinals of the Pan American Olympic Games Qualifier.

BravoYoung is one of the top two qualifiers at the weight, and thus, is going to Paris this summer.

He chose to transfer to the Mexican team over the summer and was eligible to do so due to his grandparents and great-grandparents being from Mexico. Had RBY failed to qualify at the Pan-Am qualifier, he still could have done so at the World Olympic Qualifier in Istanbul scheduled for May 9-12. But that won’t be necessary now.

Bravo-Young came to Penn State after finishing his  career at Sunnyside High School 182-0.

After going 44-9 over his first two seasons, Bravo-Young has won all 36 matches over his next two and ended both seasons as a national champion.

The 2022 season was Bravo-Young’s best. He finished with a 22-0 record and a Hodge Trophy nomination. His year climaxed March 19 when he beat Oklahoma State’s Dalton Fix to win the national championship at the 133-pound weight class.

Many felt RBY would successfully defend his crown the next season, but it wasn’t to be. He ended up making it to the national final, where he fell to Cornell’s Vito Arujau. Still, being a three-time NCAA finalist is a career anybody will take.

At 65KG, another two-time Penn State wrestling national champion, Nick Lee, fell in his semifinal match at 65KG to Mexico’s Austin Gomez, who currently wrestles at the University of Michigan and used to wrestle at Wisconsin.
