It looks like Michigan football has tabbed the man who will succeed Jim Harbaugh as head coach.
To no surprise, it’s Sherrone Moore.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news Friday night.
Moore made a name for himself in the coaching world this past season.
He ended up being Michigan’s interim coach for six of the team’s 12 regular-season games— he was the offensive coordinator for the other six— due to Harbaugh serving two three-game suspensions resulting from separate NCAA investigations. Moore and Michigan went 6-0 in those games, highlighted by wins at Penn State and against Ohio State in Ann Arbor. Following the Penn State win, Moore’s emotional postgame interview went viral.
Moore had been on Harbaugh’s staff for six seasons.
He started as the tight ends coach and held that position through the 2020 season.
From there, he became the OL coach and co-OC, positions he held through Harbaugh’s departure, which became official earlier this week. Harbaugh is now the head coach of the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers. Harbaugh left his alma mater after nine seasons, the last three being the best. Michigan’s won the last three Big Ten championships, made it to three straight College Football Playoffs and, earlier this month, capped a perfect season with a win over Washington in the national championship game.
Washington will be playing Penn State this coming season for the first time since UW joined the Big Ten.
Michigan won’t be playing Penn State again until 2026.
For the past three seasons, Michigan football was a giant thorn in Penn State’s side. Penn State’s only lost four regular season games since the start of 2022, and Michigan was responsible for half of them.
Moore was the heavy favorite to be promoted, but sportsbetting.ag had Penn State boss James Franklin with 33/1 odds, which was tied for 13th with three other coaches.
