Penn State Odds: PSU Favored Big at Michigan State

Head coach James Franklin falls to 4-16 against Ohio State and Michigan.

The early odds for Penn State football’s game Black Friday at Michigan State are in and, as expected, PSU is a big favorite.

According to the Action Network, Penn State’s an 18-point favorite over Michigan State in the annual battle for the Land Grant Trophy.

Penn State’s looking for its second straight double-digit win season, sitting at 9-2 and ranked No. 11 in the country in both the AP and Coaches Polls.

Michigan State, well, its just playing for pride.

Sparty is 4-7 and, for the second consecutive season, won’t be bowl eligible. The last time Michigan State beat Penn State was in 2021, which is also the last time the teams played in East Lansing. This game won’t be in East Lansing or Happy Valley, which is a first in series history. Instead, Penn State and Michigan State will play in Detroit’s Ford Field, home of the NFL’s Lions. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 on NBC.

Penn State is the Land Grant Trophy’s current holder. PSU beat MSU 35-16 at Beaver Stadium to close out the 2022 regular season 10-2. Penn State’s won 10 or more games four times since 2016, and has a great chance to make it five. If Penn State beats Michigan State— especially convincingly— there’s a solid chance it makes it to a New Year’s Six bowl game, which would also be the fifth such occurrence since 2016.

Penn State is 8-3 against the spread so far this season, with its “losses” coming against Ohio State, Michigan and Indiana. Penn State lost to Ohio State and Michigan on the field and didn’t cover against Indiana, winning by nine when it was favored by 32.

The betting odds are more significant than usual for Penn State, since style points are relevant when it comes to bowl selection.
