Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso, one of America’s best college wrestlers, is reportedly in the hospital due to a gunshot wound he suffered Friday evening in Columbus.

Columbus TV stations such as 10WBNS reported that there was a shooting in an attempted robbery while withholding the victim’s name.
Lehigh Valley Live’s Brad Wilson reported that Sasso— who was a star at Pennsylvania’s Nazareth Area High School before coming to Ohio State— had surgery after the shooting and went into surgery again Saturday morning, with his condition listed as “serious.”
With that said, a source close to Sasso’s family told Wilson that Sasso’s surgeon said Saturday morning that Sasso “should make a full recovery and be able to wrestle again.”
10WBNS’ report said that, per the Columbus Division of Police, there was a call around 8:23 p.m. regarding a reported shooting on North High Street in the University District on the 1300 block.
10WNBS also reported that police said “one person was found in an alley and was transported to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in serious condition.”
Ohio’s ABC6 reported that the victim identified himself to police as an Ohio State wrestler, according to an 11-year-old boy that witnessed the shooting. ABC6 also reported that “no suspects were immediately taken into custody.”
Sammy Sasso plans on competing this season at 157 pounds after a successful run in the 149-pound weight class. His current overall record is an astounding 114-13. He made it to the NCAA championships this past March, falling to Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis. Diakomihalis was among the many who wished Sasso well well on social media upon hearing the news.
Please send prayers and support out to Sam Sasso and his family, hopefully he comes out alright on the other side of this 🙏
