On Thursday, it was confirmed that former Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. will attend the NFL Draft April 27 in Kansas City.
Porter is one of 17 draft prospects that will be attending and is one of four cornerbacks that will be there for the first round of the draft, along with Illinois’ Devon Witherspoon, Oregon’s Christian Gonzalez and Alabama’s Brian Branch.
Porter will be one of five Big Ten players to be in attendance, along with Witherspoon, CJ Stroud, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Paris Johnson of Ohio State.
Porter Jr. is projected to go in the middle of the first round. Charles Davis of the NFL Network has Porter going to the Commanders at No. 16 overall.
ESPN NFL Draft analysts Mel Kiper and Todd Mcshay also have Mr. Porter going to Washington.
The Steelers, Ravens, Eagles and Patriots have also been connected to Porter.
Porter was an All-American and first-team All-Big Ten player in 2022 recording 27 tackles, 11 pass breakup, a quarterback hurry, and a fumble recovery in Penn State’s win over Purdue on opening night.
If Porter gets drafted in the first round draft, he’ll make Penn State history. He’d be the first defensive back in Penn State history to be selected in round one.
The work Porter did over four seasons at Penn State impressed his position coach, Terry Smith.
“He’s done a tremendous job,” Smith said in October. “He’s worked his tail off. This guy’s constantly in the weight room, out on the field. In the meeting room. Everything that he’s getting, he’s absolutely worked hard and deserved to get.”
“He’s reaping the rewards of arguably one of the better corners to ever play here at Penn State,” Smith said.
