Coach James Franklin’s team debuted at No. 15 last week and has moved up slightly after a 45-14 win at Indiana this past Saturday.
The team is the third-highest ranked amongst Big Ten schools, with No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Michigan being ranked well ahead. Ohio State and Michigan are the only teams that have beaten Penn State through nine games this season. The two will face off in a showdown to determine the Big Ten East and, likely, Big Ten conference champion Nov. 26 in Columbus. There’s plenty of talk about the loser of that game still being one of the four teams in the playoff.
The Big Ten’s other ranked team is Illinois, the only Big Ten West school to appear in any major rankings. The Illini are down from No. 16 last week to No. 21 after an upset loss to Michigan State at home this past Saturday. Elsewhere in the rankings, Georgia is the new No. 1, moving two up spots after taking care of the previous No. 1, Tennessee, Saturday in Athens.
Penn State was ranked No. 14 in the AP Poll and No. 15 in the coaches poll. With Maryland losing at Wisconsin this past Saturday, Penn State won’t face another ranked squad all season. Its last two opponents, Rutgers (away) and Michigan State (at home) are each 4-5. Before Penn State can worry about those games, it has to take care of the Terps this Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:30.
