On Monday, Class of 2023 Penn State commit Mathias โ€œMegaโ€ Barnwell announced on his Twitter account that he will be signing his letter of intent to play for Penn State on December 21st at 6 p.m. at Riverbend High School, which is the first day of the early signing period.

Barnwell recommitted to Penn State last September after originally becoming the first member of its 2023 recruiting class in June 2020 and then decommiting in January 2021. He had over thirty offers from Power five programs.

Barnwell, a 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end and defensive lineman from Fredericksburg, Virginia, is the number seven player in Virginia, the No. 20 athlete, and the No. 387 player in his class, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Barnwell is viewed more as an in-line tight end that can split out wide and create mismatches in the defensive secondary and is a capable run blocker that plays with a mean streak. He also plays basketball for Riverbend, so that helps him when he is going to be making catches in traffic or on 50-50 balls.

Listed as an athlete on all the recruiting sites, it’s not known yet whether Barnwell will be playing tight end at Penn State, or will switch positions, so that is something worth watching in the future.

Barnwell is the first Penn State to commit to confirm signing his letter of intent on National Signing Day.
