Former Penn State Linebacker Matt Rhule Hired as Nebraska’s Head Coach

It’s been confirmed that former Penn State linebacker Matt Rhule will be named the next head coach at the University of Nebraska.

Rhule played for Penn State from 1994-1997 and was a volunteer assistant for Penn State in 1998.

He was the head coach at Temple from 2013-16, going 28-23, winning the American Athletic Conference championship in 2016 and winning the AAC championship in 2016.

In 2017, Rhule moved on to be the head coach at Baylor, where he took over a program during a scandal. The Bears went 1-11 in their first year under his watch. Two seasons later, they went 10-3 and made the Big 12 championship game.

Baylor played in the Sugar Bowl to end that season, where it lost to the Georgia  26-14.

Rhule then became the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, where he coached for two and a half seasons, going. 11-27.

Rhule will take over for Scott Frost, who went 16-31 as head coach at Nebraska.

Despite his NFL run not going according to plan, Rhule had been one of the hottest names on the college market. He’d linked to the Auburn job before accepting the Nebraska gig. Although Frost was Nebraska’s last full-time head coach, Mickey Joseph had the job on an interim basis. Frost got fired three games into this season.

There’s plenty for Nebraska fans to like about Rhule, and fans will be able to root for the former Penn State linebacker him as well, at least for 2023. Nebraska and Penn State aren’t scheduled to play next season, and its yet to be determined when the two teams will meet again.
