It’s the second time in three weeks Penn State has landed at No. 16 in the top 25. Penn State fell from No. 10 to 16 after its 41-17 loss at Michigan Oct. 15, then rose up to No. 13 after taking care of Minnesota Oct. 22.
This past weekend Penn State fought hard against the No. 2 team in the country but ultimately fell short. Ohio State is still No. 2 in both polls, albeit tied for second place with Tennessee in the AP.
Tennessee, who has a showdown at No. 1 Georgia Saturday in Athens, is No. 3 in the coaches poll.
Michigan is Penn State’s next-highest ranked Big Ten team at No. 4. After that, Cinderella Illinois is No. 13 in the Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the AP.
The Illini are 7-1 after finishing 5-7 last year, with one of those wins coming against Penn State in nine overtimes.
Penn State started the season unranked and made its top 25 debut after Week 2. The squad is looking to finish the season ranked for the first time since 2019. In 2020, Penn State went 4-5 and followed that up with a 7-6 campaign in 2021.
No. 13 Penn State is at Indiana this Saturday at 3:30 on ABC.
