This will be the first meeting between Penn State and Northwestern since 2017. Penn State handled Northwestern on the road, 31-7, with Saquon Barkley rushing for 75 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Penn State has started this season well, winning its first three games and beating Purdue on the road in what was both its regular season and Big Ten opener.
On the contrary, Northwestern has struggled since starting the year with a win over Big Ten West foe Nebraska in Week 0. Coach Pat Fitzgeraldโs team has lost its last two games, both at home.
Northwestern lost to Duke in Week 2 and, this past week, suffered an embarrassment at the hands of Southern Illinois, 31-23.
Fitzgeraldโs program has had a rough go of it since making the Big Ten championship game in 2020.
The team went 3-9 last year and 1-8 in the Big Ten, with its only conference win being against Rutgers.
Penn State is 14-5 all-time against Northwestern in a series that started in 1993, the year Penn State began playing in the Big Ten. Two of those five wins have come in the James Franklin era. The Wildcats and Fitzgerald are 2-1 against Penn State since Franklin came to Happy Valley before the 2014 season, beating Penn State in each of Franklinโs first two years.
Game times are still undecided for the rest of Penn Stateโs schedule post-Northwestern, with the exception of the Oct. 23 matchup with Minnesota.
The Nittany Lions and Golden Gophers will kick off at 7:30 in Penn Stateโs annual White Out game.
