The first night of September was already going to be a big deal in Pennsylvania.
Pitt and West Virginia will be facing off on the North Shore for the first time in more than a decade. While that matchup will still be the main storyline, at least in Western PA, Sept. 1 just became a bigger deal for folks on the other side of the state.
Penn State’s season opener at Purdue, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 3, has been moved up two nights.

It will be the third time straight time that Penn State has opened up the season on the road against a Big Ten opponent. The Nittany Lions started 2021 at Wisconsin and 2020 at Indiana.
It’s not yet clear where the Nittany Lions-Boilermakers game will be televised, but it’s a good bet that the game will be on FS1, much like Ohio State and Minnesota’s Thursday opener was this past season.
This will be just the third meeting with Purdue in James Franklin’s eight-plus seasons at Penn State. Penn State won both of those games, and hasn’t lost to the Boilermakers since 2004, winning all nine meetings since.
