Van den Berg played in five games for Iowa Western last season, recording 13 tackles (six solo) with one sack and four tackles for loss.
He’s from South Africa and played rugby in his youth, then reportedly moved to the United States at age 10. He played his high school football at Providence Christian in Lilburn, Ga. Here is his profile from Iowa Western.
This is what he had to say about football to Hawkeye Nation after earning an offer from Iowa recently:
“I’d say it was love at first try. I just love thriving through contact. Football is the only place where I can hit someone and not get into trouble.”
247Sports’ Sean Fitz reported that van den Berg will be joining the Penn State program this weekend and be eligible to play this fall.
