Mike Watkins signs to play professionally in Colombia

Former Penn State basketball big man Mike Watkins has signed his first professional contract and will play in Colombia for a team called Cimarrones del Choco.

“Playing basketball professionally is a dream come true for me and my goal is to continue to work hard at the next level,” Watkins said in a university statement.

“I am grateful to the Cimarrones del Choco for providing me with this opportunity and I look forward to contributing on the court and in the community. There are so many who have supported me as I went after this with everything I had and I share this success with them!”

Watkins had an up-and-down career at Penn State, playing very well at times but also dealing with numerous legal issues of the court.

He finished his college career as one of only three PSU players ever to grab 900 rebounds and score 1,000 points. He tallied 953 rebounds, second most in school history, and scored 1,169 points. He’s also second in career blocks with 265.
