Penn State’s struggles on the field are beginning to carry over into recruiting.
Three-star quarterback Will Wood announced Sunday that he has flipped his commitment from Penn State to Boston College, delivering another setback to Matt Campbell’s program following Saturday’s loss to Michigan.
Wood, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect from Natick, Massachusetts, originally committed to Penn State on May 15. He will instead remain closer to home and play for former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien.
“Thank you to Coach Campbell and Penn State for their belief in me,” Wood wrote on social media. “I have zero doubt they will turn things around and deserve the fanbase’s patience.”
Wood added that he decided staying home and playing for O’Brien was the best decision for his future.
The decision comes as Penn State enters its bye week at 3-4, having lost four consecutive games without a Big Ten victory.
Wood emerged as a recruiting target following a March visit to Penn State. Quarterbacks coach Jake Waters subsequently traveled to Xaverian Brothers High School in April to evaluate Wood before the Nittany Lions extended an offer.
Wood’s production helped establish him as a promising prospect in the 2027 recruiting class.
Through his first four games this season, Wood threw for 826 yards, 15 touchdowns and one interception. He finished last season with 2,812 passing yards, 42 touchdowns and just one interception.
Wood originally chose Penn State over Boston College, but Sunday’s announcement reverses that decision.
His departure leaves Campbell and his staff searching for another quarterback prospect in their 2027 recruiting class as the program works to reverse its fortunes on the field.
