Everybody who follows college football has known for a while that Penn State would be favored over Temple, and now that the odds are out, we know by how much.
Penn State is an early 23.5-point favorite for Saturday’s matchup in Philadelphia per FanDuel Sportsbook.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Although Penn State is coming off one of the most disappointing seasons in program history (finished 7-6 after starting the season ranked No. 2), it’s still a top-20 program and supposed to take care of a group of five program that went 5-7 last season. PSU played up to its No. 18 ranking Saturday, winning coach Matt Campbell’s debut 45-0 against Marshall.
Temple did get a 24-point win, but it was against an FCS program in Rhode Island.
This will be the first time Penn State and Temple have played since 2016, and that game went the way 40 of the 45 meetings between the PA teams have gone– with Penn State winning.
But the last time Penn State played in Lincoln Financial Field– where Saturday’s game will be– Temple pulled off a stunner, 27-10.
Penn State was a heavy road favorite that day at 14 points, meaning it was a pretty big upset. This would require an even bigger one. Before 2015, Penn State hadn’t lost to Temple since 1941, less than two months before Pearl Harbor. If Penn State looks anywhere close to how it did against Marshall Saturday, Temple will have to wait longer to have another moment of glory at PSU’s expense.
