Penn State has landed its first quarterback commit of the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Friday afternoon, four-star Will Wood announced his commitment. He picked Matt Campbell and Penn State over Bill O’Brien and Boston College.
Wood broke down his decision with NSN.
“The number one reason that I decided to commit to Penn State because of how close I became with the staff,” Wood told NSN. “I got really close to Coach (Jake) Waters and Coach Campbell and their vision for me at Penn State was inspiring.”
Wood previously told NSN that Waters was the coach he had grown closest to on staff.
He made his decision the day before announcing his commitment, and Wood said what sealed the deal for him was when Penn State’s entire offensive staff travelled to Natick, Massachusetts to see him and his family.
Penn State fans who have followed Wood’s recruitment have liked the 6-foot-2, 220-pounder to a taller, bigger version of PSU QB great Trace McSorley.
Wood sees the similarities.
“He is tough, a winner a guy who can make every throw but is also an athlete that can make plays off schedule. Those are all things that I pride myself on.”

In this year’s state title game, known as the “Super Bowl” in Massachusetts, Wood balled out, throwing for 345 yards and five touchdowns.
Now, Wood is moving away from Massachusetts, but he feels he’s ready for the move.
“I have family a little over an hour away and I chose Penn State because the campus felt like home,” Wood said. “It was obviously very hard to turn down Bill O’Brien, but in the end, my heart was with Penn State.”
So how did Campbell and company react when they heard the news?
“The staff was fired up,” he said. “Coach Campbell told me to enjoy the day and then in a day we were going to sit down on the phone to go through a plan of guys we have to go get to join this class.”
Penn State now has 18 players committed to its 2027 Class, and Wood is stoked about being No. 18.
“To the Penn State fans, I’m fired up to represent you all and I can’t wait to make you guys proud,” he said.
