The Penn State men’s basketball team began their 2-game West Coast road trip against the Huskies tonight and came away with a thrilling 63-60 victory in their first-ever trip to Washington.
Penn State’s Kayden Mingo and Dominick Stewart got the Nittany Lions going with three-point makes.
At the first media timeout of the first half (15:38) the score was 9-6 in favor of Washington.
The Huskies,’ Wesley Yates, III, was leading all scorers with six points.
The Nittany Lions clawed back and took the lead, 16-15, with (12:18) left in the first half. Two drives by Freddie Dilione, V. and two layups from Eli Rice led the charge and Washington was forced to use one of their timeouts.
Penn State went on a 10-0 run and at the (9:25) mark it was PSU 20 Washington 15.
The home team, though, stormed back and at the second media timeout (7:36) the score was all tied 20-20. Huskies leading scorer, Hannes Steinbach, had a quick seven points.
The Nittany Lions, once again, clawed back, and regained the lead, 29-25, after Rice drilled a shot from downtown (3:21). Rice was 3-of-3 shooting with seven points.
The score at halftime was Nittany Lions 35 Huskies 32.
Dilione was leading the Blue & White with eight points and Yates was leading the Huskies with eight points as well.
PSU shot 48% from the field in the first half and Washington shot 40% from the field.
To start the second half, Huskies’ Yates, knocked in a three to tie the score at 35-35 (19:24).
Then PSU’s, Josh Reed, started to get hot and scored eight straight points and at the first media timeout of the second half it was the Nittany Lions 43 Huskies 39 (15:25). Reed was leading all scorers with 14 points.
Penn State stretched their lead to six, 47-41, after an Eli Rice drive to the hoop (12:46).
But then Washington started to climb back and with (10:11) left in the game it was Penn State 48 Washington 46. Huskies’, Steinbach, had five quick points to start the second half.
Quimari Peterson for the Huskies then made a three to give the Huskies the lead 49-48 (9:10).
At the (7:41) media timeout, the score was all locked at 51-51.
Dilione then gave the Nittany Lions the lead back after a nifty shot in the lane, 55-54 (5:32).
After a Washington timeout with (2:54) left in the game, the score was tied for the eighth time tonight, 57-57.
In a game that went back-and-forth from start to finish that saw 15 lead changes, Penn State hung on for the thrilling victory, 63-60.
