University Park, Pa. — There had been optimism that forward Charlie Cerrato would reunite with fellow forwards JJ Wiebusch and Matt DiMarsico this season, bringing the “B-T-B Boys” back together for the regular season.
That reunion will not happen.
Penn State men’s ice hockey head coach Guy Gadowsky announced at his weekly press conference on Tuesday, that Cerrato will miss the remainder of the regular season due to injury. Gadowsky did not elaborate on the nature of the injury or provide additional details but hopeful for a return in the NCAA Tournament.
For No. 5 Penn State, the loss is a significant blow to its depth and lineup versatility. Cerrato suffered the injury after just four minutes of ice time against Minnesota on January 9. At the time, he led the Nittany Lions in both assists (18) and points (24) and ranked 14th nationally in scoring.
Beyond his offensive production, Cerrato’s absence is particularly impactful in the faceoff circle. He led all Penn State skaters with a 59.7 percent faceoff win rate at the time of his injury, a mark approaching the elite threshold of 60 percent.
The line of Cerrato, Wiebusch, and DiMarsico had been one of the most productive trios in the nation, averaging nearly four points per game since coming together in the second half of the 2024–25 season. That unit played a key role in Penn State’s historic run to its first-ever Frozen Four appearance.
Since Cerrato’s injury, Reese Laubach has stepped in to center the line alongside Wiebusch and DiMarsico.
Now ranked No. 5, Penn State faces a pivotal weekend, hosting No. 2 Michigan State on Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena before skating in Saturday afternoon’s outdoor classic at Beaver Stadium.
