In recruiting news, it’s not a surprise that former Penn State commit Matt Sieg ended up committing elsewhere.
Where he landed is the suprising part.
Last week, Sieg announced his last group of finalists: Indiana, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt and Virginia Tech.
West Virginia was not on the final list, and Nittany Sports Now even confirmed that Sieg’s scheduled Nov. 29 visit to WVU would not take place. But you never know what’s going to happen on signing day, and it turns out that WVU was the place Sieg wanted to be.
The two favorites for Sieg before Dec. 3 seemed to be Virginia Tech, which is now coached by James Franklin, who Sieg committed to Penn State with the intention of playing for, and Pitt, which is the school closest to home for the Fort Cherry star.
He ended up throwing a curveball.
After recent reports suggested WVU was out of the running, Sieg ended up signing with the Mountaineers during a live ceremony on the Early National Signing Day.
A day after announcing his recruitment was back open due to Penn State firing Franklin, Sieg revealed he was re-offered by WVU.
“Thankful to have been re-offered by West Virginia,” posted Sieg on Monday. Sieg was initially offered by Neal Brown’s WVU staff and made a visit to Morgantown before eventually committing to Franklin and Penn Statein November of 2024.
The four-star safety prospect told Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.comthat he was re-opening his recruitment after learning the news about Franklin’s firing. He then wrote his own post to social media later.
“I love Penn State and am still open to being a Lion,” said Sieg, “but with the uncertainty of the current situation, my family and I are trying to make sure we make the best decision for the future. Please respect our decision.”
At this time, I am still committed to current staff at Penn State,” he told Fawcett. “However, due to the recent changes and uncertainty, I have decided to re-open my recruitment.”
Sieg has broken multiple WPIAL records, with the one of them being for career total yardage, which he set Oct. 10. The next day, Penn State suffered a stunning loss at the hands of Northwestern, and the day after that, Franklin was fired.
Sieg is the No. 2 player in Pennsylvania per 247Sports, along with the No. 9 safety in the country from his class and the No. 79 overall player. Despite playing quarterback, he’s projected to be a safety at the next level.
WVU’s involvement seemed to signal an opportunity for Sieg to play offense as well. Sieg did talk about his desire to play offense with WVSN at the beginning of his recruitment.
Sieg also had offers from schools such as Alabama, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Pitt, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse, Temple, USC, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.
