Penn State wrestling received a visit from one of the top recruits in the Class of 2027.
Grey Burnett, the No. 6 Class of 2027 prospect according to MatScouts, took a visit to PSU over the weekend and was photographed along with current wrestlers such as Marcus Blaze and Luke Lilledahl.
The Blaze connection is particularly significant.
The two were teammates at Ohio’s Perrysburg High School, where Blaze became the No. 1 pound for pound wrestler in the country and, eventually, a Penn State Nittany Lion. It’s hard to compare anybody to Blaze, who won four state championships and finished with a record of 200-2.
But Burnett has done quite well for himself, winning state championships in each of his first two seasons and placing third at the U17 World Championships over the summer.
Burnett is a guy any college program would like to have, and as of now, only three are in the mix, and all of them are heavy hitters.
There’s Ohio State, which is Burnett’s in-state school.
There’s Nebraska, which, next to Penn State, is arguably the best school in the country.
Then, there’s Penn State, which has won 12 of the last 14 national titles.
Penn State’s Class of 2027 is already looking good, with Gavin Mangano, James Whitbred and Landon Sidun all committed. Sidun is the No. 2 pound-for-pound wrestler in the Class of 2027 per FloWrestling.
Burnett projects to be a 125 or 133-pounder at the college level. Penn State’s current 125-pounder is Luke Lilledahl, who took third at nationals as a true freshman last season. It’s 133-pounder is, wouldn’t you know it, Marcus Blaze.
Blaze will be a junior by the time Burnett is a freshman, and Penn State fans would prefer those two to be teammates once again.
