Penn State lost one of its 2027 Commits two days before James Franklin got fired, and lost another one the day he got fired.
5-Star OT Layton Von Brandt told Rivals.com that his recruitment is open again.
“After talking to my family I will be decommitting from Penn State,” he said. “My recruitment is 100 percent open.”
This is a contrast from what Von Brandt told Nittany Sports Now in the days following the team’s first monumental upset loss at UCLA.
“As far as the state of the program right now I trust Coach Franklin & Coach (Phil Trautwein) to get it turned around this season,” he wrote. “I committed to Penn State because of them and the relationship we built with each other . I have total faith in Coach Franklin’s vision and where he will take the program into the future. As long as Coach Franklin & Coach Trautwein are there I have ZERO worries about Penn State continuing to be a top program.”
But a lot has changed since then.
Penn State lost as a three-touchdown favorite to Northwestern, and less than 24 hours later, Franklin was fired.
Before Franklin’s firing, there were already cracks in the 2027 class.
Four-star WR Khalil Taylor announced his de-commitment Friday, and later that night, five-star RB Kemon Spell told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette he was “no longer locked in” with Penn State.
