Penn State Punter Gabriel Nwosu Named to Ray Guy Award Watch List

Penn State changed punters from 2024 to 2025 despite retaining the same personnel. The Nittany Lions chose Gabriel Nwosu to handle punting duties after being the program’s primary kickoff man last year.

On Tuesday, Nwosu was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List. The 6-foot-6 redshirt senior didn’t punt in the season opener against Nevada, but has posted solid performances in the final two games of non-conference action.

Nwosu punted three times in the FIU matchup, including a season-long 67-yard boot. All three of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line and averaged over 53 yards per punt.

Both of his punts against Villanova also landed inside the 20 and is batting 1.000 in that area. He posted a 41.5 average following his two punts and owns a 48.6 average this season.

Nwosu is one of 72 candidates for the Ray Guy Award, awarded to the FBS Punter of the Year. The award is presented by the Augusta Sports Council and was created by the council in 2000.

To be considered for the award, a school’s Athletic Communications/Sports Information department sends in an application for their punter to be considered. Nwosu was not one of the 15 preseason nominees before the season.

He is one of 11 Big Ten punters being discussed for the 2025 Ray Guy Award.

Penn State hosts Oregon, whose punter James Ferguson-Reynolds is up for the award, in the 2025 White Out Game on September 27. The game will kick off inside West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on NBC in the 2025 Big Ten conference opening game.
