OSU AD: Penn State ‘Blackout’ Likely Noon Kick

Saquon Barkley had a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but gained only 44 yards on 21 carries in No. 2 Penn State’s 39-38 loss to No. 6 Ohio State in Ohio Stadium on Oct. 29, 2017. Photo by Paul Burdick

For a majority of Penn State fans, they can empathize with their Ohio State counterparts’ plight of major games being at noon.

This week, Ohio State unveiled its 2025 stadium themes, the Nov. 1 clash with Penn State is the annual “Blackout” showdown.

Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork doesn’t think the “Blackout” will get a primetime kick.

Bjork appeared on All Sides with Amy Juravich and he predicted the matchup would be slated for FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff.

With Ohio State being a strong draw at noon for FOX, he thinks that game will get the early window.

“I think we know the Buckeyes drive Big Noon Kickoff,” Bjork said. “That’ll be a high-powered game. So I think we probably know what’s going to happen around game time for that one. … FOX, they love the Buckeyes. And Big Noon is a big deal. They’ve invested in that time slot. We’ll presume it’s a 12 noon kickoff.”

With many Ohio State fans not happy being relegated for the early window, Ohio state representative Tex Fischer proposed legislation in May that would prevent any state university in Ohio from competing in a game before 3:30 PM window if both teams are ranked in the Top 10 of the AP Poll.

Fischer’s legislation has a provision for an earlier kickoff if it is part of a “college football tradition”  (i.e. Ohio State vs. Michigan).

While the legislation did not advance, the angst of Big Noon continues to swirl around other Big Ten schools.
