What Does Kirk Herbstreit Think of This Penn State Team?

College GameDay is coming to Penn State for the first time since 2021.

Anticipation continues to build for what could be a memorable Penn State football season.

PSU enters the 2025 campaign with high expectations and legitimate national championship aspirations.

To do so, the team needs to get over the hump.

Penn State is 1-10 against Ohio State under James Franklin and play the Buckeyes Nov. 2 in Columbus.

Franklin is 1-15 against AP top 5 teams and 4-19 against the top 10.

ESPN College GameDay panelist and color analyst Kirk Herbstreit told The Pat McAfee Show Wednesday that he’s excited to see what Penn State does this season. With most key starters returning, it bodes well for the Nittany Lions.

“I think Penn State has a chance,” Herbstreit said. “With what they went through last year, they’ve been so close.”

PSU fans haven’t been shy in their frustration over big-time losses to Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame and others over the years. Penn State is consistently a top 10-15 team, if not better. The final leap is making it to the next level and staying there.

“I think their fans want them to get there,” Herbstreit said. “They were close last year. I’m excited to see them.”

Penn State lost 27-24 to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Orange Bowl in Miami.

The team finished 13-3, made the Big Ten Championship game and won two playoff games in the expanded 12-team CFP field.

Quarterback Drew Allar, running backs Nicolas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, center Nick Dawkins, defensive tackle Zane Durant, edge rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton, and safety Zakee Wheatley are back to guide an experienced roster looking to make Penn State history for the first time in 39 years.

Penn State begins the 2025 season hosting Nevada on August 30.
