Penn State QB Rocco Becht didn’t play well against Wisconsin, and his next game against Northwestern wasn’t much better, if at all.
Becht finished 26 of 41 for 243 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, with the touchdown coming in garbage time.
Plenty of Penn State fans on social media called for Becht to be benched for backup Alex Manske.
But coach Matt Campbell told reporters after the game that PSU never considered it.
So why is Becht the best quarterback for this team?
WHAT CAMPBELL SAID
“I think Rocco’s experience, number one.”
Becht leads all active starting QBs in college football with 44 starts.
“I think Rocco’s proven that he can work through a football game where you know it’s not perfect and having the ability to adjust within the football game. And to be honest with you, Rocco’s worked through hard before and he’s proven he’s got the great ability to do it. And you know the fact of the matter of it is, Rocco’s a winner.”
With 29 wins, Becht is the winningest active quarterback in college football.
“He’s won a lot of football games, and he’s had to work through really hard situations, and we’re kind of in one of those right now, and so his leadership and his ability to navigate, you know, the rough waters right now will be, I think, a testament to him as we get ourselves out of it.”
ROCCO’S WORDS
NSN’s Alan Saunders asked Becht what about his experience could help Penn State get through where it is at the moment.
“I’ve gotten blown out before,” Becht said. “Just like today. Against a team like Northwestern who’s good, who’s physical on defense, who’s sound, and I’ve won a lot of games. But at the end of the day, I’ve been down in the dumps like really bad, and I’ve brought myself back up, and I’m going to continue to do that now. I’m not going to go and sulk and home and tell myself I’m bad at football. I’m going to continue to do what I do and continue to get better, because that’s all I know. So we’ll see a different brand of football in the next coming weeks, because I’m going to hold this team accountable. Everyone’s going to hold this team accountable. All of the leaders are going to continue to lead, and we’ll be fine.”
Both Becht and Campbell understand that what’s going on right now isn’t good enough.
“Rocco, we have great belief in,” Campbell said, “just like I have belief in all of our players, and really I have great belief in our coaches. But we got to find answers, and we got to get it fixed fast.”
