Penn State basketball will take on a Big East program during its non-conference season.
The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday afternoon that Penn State is slated to take on Providence Nov. 22 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Coach Mike Rhoades, entering his third season as Penn Stateโs boss, released a statement.
“Weโre excited for the opportunity to bring our team to the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut to face a strong Providence team,โ Rhoades said. โThis will be our second-straight year competing in a Hall of Fame event, and we know it will be a first-class experience for our group. The game will challenge our team early in the season and allow our fans and alumni in the Northeast region the chance to see us play in a fun college basketball environment.โ
Last season, Penn State took on Virginia Tech in the Hall of Fame series, blowing out the Hokies by 22 points.
Penn State and Providence have met three times before, with Penn State winning two of them.
The most notable meeting took place in the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
Penn State, seeded seventh, beat tenth-seeded Providence 69-59. PSU went onto pull a bigger upset in the next round against North Carolina before falling to John Chaneyโs Temple Owls in the Sweet 16.
Penn State most recently played Providence in 2012, getting a 55-52 overtime win in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
PSU-Providence will be one end of a doubleheader. The other game is Boston University against Harvard, two schools located in the same town.
The time of the game and broadcast information will be revealed at a later date.
