A shot by Fink with around 2:20 left was a great chance but ultimately saved by Mikhail Yegorov.
At the end of the period, it was scoreless with BU holding an 11-7 edge in shots on goal.
Early in the second period, Sergeev’s first slip of the night led to the game’s first goal. After a saving a harmless shot, Boston’s Jack Hughes pounced on the puck and made it 1-0.
Penn State went on the power play at 5:55 of the second period but wasn’t able to convert, not even getting a shot on goal during that power play.
With a little more than nine minutes left in the second period, Cole Hutson made it 2-0 on a perfectly executed 2 on 1.
Penn State cut the deficit in half 2:12 into the third period on a goal by freshman Nick DeGraves.
An empty netter with 59 seconds left sealed the deal.
Had Penn State won, it would have played Western Michigan in the national title game, scheduled for 7:30 Saturday night.
