In transfer portal news, former Penn State basketball player Puff Johnson is expected to enter but it might not matter.
Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reported this late Thursday afternoon.
As far as the current rules go, Johnson has already exhausted his eligibility.
He started his career at North Carolina in 2020-21 and thanks to the โCOVID year,โ Johnson was able to play at Penn State in 2024-25.
But the impending house settlement could be a game changer. The settlement, titled โHouse vs. NCAA,โ could lead to all players having an extra year of eligibility.
In any case, if Johnson is allowed to play college basketball next season, it wonโt be at Penn State. Although Johnson was at Penn State for two seasons, he only got to fully live out one. His 2024-25 campaign ended in mid-January when he suffered an apparent wrist injury at Michigan State. It was a big blow for both Johnson and Penn State. Statistically, Johnson was having the best year of his career, averaging highs in points (10.2) rebounds (4.4) and even assists (0.6).
Penn State was 12-5 at the time of Johnsonโs injury and finished 16-15.
So, yeah, it made a big impact.
In Johnsonโs first season at Penn State, he played in 29 games, starting 12. He ended the year averaging 7.3 points and 3.1 rebounds.
Before PSU, Johnson spent three seasons at UNC, where he helped the team to an NCAA Championship Game appearance in 2022.
Although UNC fell to Kansas, Johnson had whatโs probably the most famous moment of his college career, playing so hard that he threw up on the court.
Johnson would be the sixth Penn State player to enter the transfer portal. Three of the first five have found new homes.
