A Star is Born: Penn State Wrestling Freshman Luke Lilledahl Stuns Top-Ranked Matt Ramos

There’s no reason to think All-American Luke Lilledahl will be back at 125 for Penn State next season.

Wrestling fans knew Penn State 125-pounder Luke Lilledahl would become a star eventually but not everyone thought it would happen so soon.

In what could well go down as his “I’ve arrived” moment, Lilledahl stunned the No. 1 wrestler in the country at 125, Matt Ramos, in the Big Ten Semifinals Saturday night in Evanston.

Lilledahl didn’t just beat Ramos: He was in control the whole way. He got out to a 7-0 lead and never let Ramos back in the match, and in fact ended up getting a bonus point win, 12-4.

This will give Penn State a chance to win a Big Ten individual title at 125 for the second year can row. Braeden Davis did so as a true freshman last season before moving to 133.

All that’s in Lilledahl’s way is Nebraska’s Caleb Smith, seeded second.

The final session for the Big Ten championships are scheduled to begin at 5:30 Sunday.
