Owen Freeman (16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks) and Drew Thelwell (16 points, five rebounds and four assists) led four double-digit scorers as Iowa (13-7, 3-6) snapped its three-game losing streak by beating Penn State (13-7, 3-6) 76-75.
Penn State was led by Nick Kern Jr.’s 18 points (seven rebounds and two assists). Yanic Konan Niederhauser (13 points, four rebounds and two steals) and Freddie Dilione V (10 points, seven rebounds and two assists) combined for 23 points in the loss.
Overall, Penn State shot 49% from the field and 23% from 3. Iowa shot 50% from the field and 48% from deep.
PSU’s last win on the road against Iowa was on Dec. 2, 2017.
Key First-Half Moment: After the game was tied at 21 apiece, Iowa, on the back of Freeman’s 11 points and the team’s five 3s, built a 41-31 advantage. But, Penn State would respond with a 7-2 run over the final 2:22 to make it a five-point game by the break.
Key Second-Half Moment: Penn State trailed by as many as 10 in the second half but had a chance to win it at the end after closing the final 7:09 on a 17-8 run. Dilione, with Penn State down one, had his number called for the final shot but didn’t get it off in time.
Deciding Factor: Iowa had a bounce-back performance from 3 after a 3-for-21 showing against Minnesota on Tuesday. The Hawkeyes shot 11-for-23 from deep, the fourth time they’ve made 11 3s this season.
Penn State’s next game will be on Monday at No. 21 Michigan. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
