The No. 1 team in the country played like it Wednesday night, and unfortunately for Penn State, it was on the other end.
Top-ranked Pitt (7-0) dispatched No. 3 Penn State (8-1) in straight sets, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-19.
Pitt got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead and taking the set, 25-15.
The second set had a similar start, with Pitt leading 5-2. But Penn State battled back to take an 8-7 lead. But Pitt scored eight of the next 11 points to go up 15-11 by the media timeout. Penn State fought again to make it 17-16, but Pitt scored five of the next six to go up 21-17. It ended up winning the set 25-19.
Pitt started the third set up 3-1. It eventually built an 18-12 lead and never looked back.
Penn State will look to bounce back this weekend at the Penn State Classic. It takes on James Madison Friday in Rec Hall (6 p.m.), followed by either James Madison or Yale Saturday (11 a.m.) and Yale Sunday (2 p.m.)
