Unlike a majority of Power Four football programs, Penn State football made the decision to play a challenging opponent in their opening game.
The Nittany Lions traveled to Morgantown and not only defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers but did so in a convincing manner.
In front of a nationally televised audience, Penn State was impressive in all three phases of the game. Tom Allen’s defense completely shut down WVU quarterback Garrett Greene, limiting him to just 161 yards passing and to 5 yards rushing on 10 carries. WVU’s other big weapon CJ Donaldson was also held to 42 yards on 12 carries.
Offensively, Penn State’s ground game racked up 227 yards rushing, led by junior Nicholas Singleton’s 114 yards. Quarterback Drew Allar, someone that viewed as Penn State’s most important player, averaged 12.7 yards per pass, threw for 3 touchdowns and ran the ball 6 times for 44 yards.
Penn State along with Georgia, arguably turned in the most impressive week one performances in college football.
The computers at ESPN agree with that as Penn State football made a jump in their FPI Top 25 rankings.
