McAfee: Penn State QB Drew Allar ‘Looked UNBELIEVABLE’

It was only natural that West Virginia legend Pat McAfee would talk up his alma mater leading into its season-opening showdown with QB Drew Allar and No. 8 Penn State Aug. 31.

Among other things, McAfee said WVU would “run wild”on Penn State.

QB Garrett Greene ended up running the ball for five yards on 10 careers, which pretty much sums up how the day went for WVU.

Penn State pounded West Virginia 34-12 and WVU didn’t score a touchdown until the outcome was sealed. In the aftermath of WVU’s loss, McAfee credited Penn State and talked extensively about its quarterback.

Drew Allar played arguably the best game of his college career Saturday in Morgantown, going 11-for-17 for 216 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

On Tuesday’s show, McAfee wondered how another Big Ten power let Allar get away.

“Allar’s an Ohio dude,” McAfee said. “I completely forgot about that. I don’t know how you let him out of Ohio State, first of all. But I appreciate the fact that he decided to go to Penn State because I assume there were a lot of people in his close circle that weren’t necessarily thrilled with that when he made that decision. But there wasn’t a single conversation anywhere in Happy Valley about his development from last year to this year.”

McAfee– who referred to him as a “freight train”  during Saturday’s game– said Allar “threw darts” and was impressed at how he responded to a 139-minute weather delay.

“They had a two-hour delay, which, you know, that’s not an easy thing… and he came back even better out of the two-hour delay when they were stuck in the locker room,” McAfee said.

For McAfee, Allar’s strengths are also Penn State’s strengths.

“Penn State’s big, fast, strong, and the quarterback is all of those things, and he talks shit,” McAfee said. “So it’s like, I feel like Penn State might be a little bit different this year.

The “talking shit” part is likely a reference to Allar’s stiff arm and subsequent celebration.

Overall, McAfee still believes in the Mountaineers but summed up Week 1 well.

“Their team got better (after the delay) he said. “Our team got worse.”
