Updated Heisman odds are circulating as college football officially begins this weekend, and plenty of Penn State  fans will be curious to see where QB Drew Allar ranks.
Penn State begins the 2024 season at West Virginia Aug. 31, led by the junior quarterback and first-time captain.
Allar ranks 16th in Heisman odds, as of August 21, at 33/1. Oregon transfer QB Dillon Gabriel slots as the Heisman favorite (6/1) entering the regular season.
Fellow Big Ten quarterback Will Howard (16/1) is the only other member of the conference to rank higher than Allar. Seven SEC players rank in the top 15.
A second-year starter and potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Allar embarks on his third season as a key contributor to the PSU offense after getting his feet wet playing behind Sean Clifford during the 2022 Rose Bowl season.
Allar, 20, is working with first-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki after earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors.
Last season, Drew Allar completed 60% of his passes for 2,631 yards and 25 touchdowns. Allar also rushed for 170 yards and four touchdowns. He only threw two interceptions and was one of the best quarterbacks in the country protecting the ball.
One caveat to Allar’s game and Penn State’s offense was taking shots and threatening the ball down field. The key component to a potential Heisman run for Allar depends on his performance in five consecutive games against UCLA (Oct. 5), at USC (Oct. 12), at Wisconsin (Oct. 26), Ohio State (Nov. 2), and Washington (Nov. 9).
Taking more risks and chances with the deep ball could take the offense to new heights and a considerable threat to make the College Football Playoff.
