Hours after former Penn State QB Sean Clifford was released by the Packers, his predecessor at starter, Trace McSorley, was released by the Washington Commanders.
Per NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, McSorley has been released less than two days after Washington played its last preseason game of 2024.
But as Rapoport noted in his post to X (formerly Twitter), McSorley could be brought back soon because he performed well in the preseason.
The #Commanders are releasing QB Trace McSorley, though he could be back soon given his performance in the preseason.

Sunday night against the Patriots, McSorley completed 12 of 21 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown. His pass to Martavis Bryant, in particular, garnered a lot of attention. History also favors McSorley’s chances to land somewhere else, if not Washington.

He’s been in the NFL since the Baltimore Ravens, selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 Draft.
McSorley has since spent time with the Ravens, Cardinals, Patriots, Bears and Steelers. The latter three stops over last season. McSorley spent the preseason with the Patriots before being released in late August. He was then out of football for almost two months. Then, the Bears signed him in late October.
He spent three seasons in Baltimore and two more with the Arizona Cardinals. He saw the most extensive playing time of his career in Arizona last year. He appeared in six games, completing 45 of 83 passes (54.2%) for 412 yards (5.0 yards per attempt), no touchdowns, five interceptions and a 42.8 passer rating.
But Penn State fans will always know Trace McSorley best for what he did in college. McSorley was a three-year starter before turning pro. He finished his time at Penn State with 9,899 yards, 77 touchdowns, 25 interceptions and a 144.5 passer rating.
