On Wednesday night, the Pitt-Penn State rivalry will live on as Pitt’s alumni team “Zoo Crew” hosts Penn State’s “Happy Valley Hoopers” in The Basketball Tournament.
Pitt’s alumni group is coming off a victory over Best Virginia, West Virginia’s alumni squad. Gilbert Brown’s squad advanced to the third round of TBT with Monday night’s win, looking to Mike Young, Nike Sibande, and Nelly Cummings for offensive production. Young led the way with 23 points, including the game-winning fadeaway jumper to clinch the Elam Ending for Pitt’s group. Sibande followed with 21 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while Cummings hit a team-best four three pointers to finish with 17.
Happy Valley Hoopers took down the region’s top seed “Stars of Storrs,” a UConn alumni team, on Monday night. The group of former Nittany Lions is led by GM John Harrar, along with Samuel Sessoms, Greg Lee, and others.
Harrar played for Penn State from 2017-22, averaging a career-best 10.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game as a senior in 2022. Sessoms played two seasons for the Nittany Lions, coming to Happy Valley from Binghamton. He then transferred to Coppin State for the 2022-23 season.
Lee is a 6-foot-9 forward who spent time at Western Michigan and Cal State Bakersfield before transferring to Penn State for his final season.
