Penn State All 105: Terry Smith, PSU Could Have Another CB Gem in Jon Mitchell

Photo by Penn State Athletics: Jon Mitchell

Penn State has had quite a lineage of cornerbacks over the past few seasons, and Jon Mitchell hopes to one day join that lineage.

Joey Porter Jr. went with the 32nd overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This past April, Kalen King and Daequan Hardy were drafted.

In 2024, Penn State will have to account for the departures of King, Hardy and Johnny Dixon.

It’s not likely that Mitchell, a true freshman, will get a lot of playing time right away. But he could be a formidable corner for Penn State down the line. Mitchell is the subject in the latest edition of All 105, a Nittany Sports Now series profiling each Penn State football player.

Height: 5-foot-11

Weight: 182 pounds

Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida

Before Penn State:

Jon Mitchell was considered a top target by cornerbacks coach Terry Smith.

At the time of his commitment in April 2023, Mitchell was the No. 17 cornerback and No. 197 player nationally and the No. 30 overall player in Florida according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. On3 had Mitchell as the No. 9 player in Florida, the No. 8 cornerback and No. 63 player nationally.

Mitchell has experience playing in man and in zone coverage. He also has the size to fight through blocks and make tackles in run support. Mitchell’s, Nick, who plays linebacker at Mississippi State, and another brother Kris who plays at FIU.

A quote by Mitchell: It feels like home to me. “The way he (Smith) develops his cornerbacks to be elite stands out. Also, I just fell in love with the facilities and all the coaches are genuine. It’s a family I want to be a part of.” — Mitchell on Penn State to Hayes Fawcett of On3Sports upon his commitment.

A quote about Mitchell: ”Should be viewed as a potential multi-year starter at the Power Five level. Could likely play multiple spots in the secondary, especially after a year or two in a college weight room as he isn’t shy in the box. Comes from a football family as two of his brothers inked with FBS programs coming out of high school while a third graduated from Harvard.” — Excerpt from Andrew Ivins’ scouting report on 247Sports
