Mahaffey is a 6-foot-6, 200-pound shooting guard and small forward who was a three-star recruit of Archbishop Moeller in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He was the number six player in Ohio, the No. 42 small forward, and the No. 187 overall prospect in the Class of 2022, according to 247Sports Composite Rankings.
Mahaffey is one of former Penn State head coach Micah Shrewsbury’s most prized recruits, along with fellow three-star recruits Kebba Njie and Kanye Clary. He played in 34 games last year as a freshman with zero starts and averaged 2.8 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 0.4 assists while playing 9.3 minutes per game.
He scored a season-high of 12 points in a 85-66 win at home on Jan. 11 against Indiana. However, his biggest play of the season was when he grabbed an offensive rebound off a Jalen Pickett Missed jumper that led to Camren Wynter’s game-winning three-point shot in a March 2 game at Northwestern that started a five-game winning streak that secured its bid to the NCAA tournament.

Mahaffey is the third Penn State player to hit the transfer portal as Dallion Johnson and Caleb Dorsey have also entered the portal. However, in the case of Mahaffey, the next head coach would have to do some convincing for Mahaffey to remain at Penn State.
Mahaffey will have four years of eligibility remaining.
