Maryland DE Devon Baxter Talks Penn State Offer

The state of Maryland is a place that Penn State has historically pulled a lot of talented football players from.

In the last few years, the Penn State staff has signed 4-star defensive end Mason Robinson (Owings Mills, Maryland), 5-star defensive lineman Dani Dennis-Sutton (Owings Mills, Maryland), 4-star offensive lineman Landon Tengwall (Annapolis, Maryland), 4-star safety KJ Winston (Hyattsville, Maryland), 4-star defensive end Coziah Izzard (Laurel, Maryland), 4-star linebacker Curtis Jacobs (Owings Mills, Maryland) and 4-star offensive lineman Golden Israel-Achumba (Hyattsville, Maryland) all were players the Nittany Lions staff got from The Old Line State.

This morning, Penn State was back recruiting there as they offered 2024 3-star defensive end Obinna Onwuka and 2024 3-star defensive end Dexton Baxter.

After receiving the news from Penn State, Nittany Sports Now caught up in between classes with Baxter to get his instant reaction.

“The Penn State coaches said they liked my film and the way I play,” said Baxter. “This offer means a lot because Penn State is a top program and produces a lot of high-quality athletes. They look for the athletes who can be developed into high skilled ones, so it always means a lot when someone believes in you like that. Penn State will definitely be highly ranked for me just based off my respect for the school and the athletes they produce.”

Over the upcoming months, Baxter plans to develop his relationship with members of the Nittany Lions staff, especially Anthony Poindexter, in order to learn more about Penn State football. Despite not knowing a ton yet, Baxter was able to point out something that really stands out to him about Penn State football.

“I love how serious they take the weightroom,” said Baxter. “You always hear about Penn State players in the weight room. I have always felt that in order to be successful on the field, the things off the field have to be taken just as serious. I also love how well the coaches at Penn State treat their players.”

Prior to today’s news from Penn State, Baxter previously received offers from Boston College, Duke, East Carolina, Duke, Maryland, Rutgers, Tennessee, Akron and Virginia Tech.

“I think my biggest strengths are that I’m a leader on and off the field. I have a strong pass rush but also play the run extremely well. I honestly don’t know what I will excel at in college, only time will tell.”

At this point of his recruitment, Baxter tells NSN the schools that are in touch with him the most are Tennessee, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Duke and James Madison and currently, doesn’t have any upcoming planned visits.
