Penn State basketball had its NCAA Tournament hopes took a hit Tuesday night in Piscataway.
Coach Micah Shrewsberry’s team shot 4-for-26 from 3-point land and failed to break 50 points in a 65-45 loss to Rutgers.
The loss drops Penn State to 13-7 overall and 4-5 in the Big Ten.
Penn State basketball has 11 conference games left, and we haven’t yet reached February. But this loss is a bad look.
The people of Twitter agreed, and here’s what they had to say.

Death, taxes, and Penn State basketball will ALWAYS DISAPPOINT. God could coach this team, and it wouldn't make a difference.

Not many ways to sugarcoat at 65-45 loss. Give yourself a chance in the Big Ten if you hold people to 65 points, don't give yourself a chance if you shoot 15% from three and are -16 in paint scoring.

Kind of appreciate Shrews calling the team soft when the last guy would just be like "we're a bounce away, a shot away"

key word from Micah Shrewsberry's postgame news conference at Jersey Mike's Arena: soft
— Daniel Gallen (@danieljtgallen) January 25, 2023
Micah Shrewsberry: "Can't play soft in this league and win. We played soft and got beat by 20."

Penn State has made this season pretty easy to figure out. Three going in? Yes, probably win. No, probably lose. Rutgers is tough to beat on the road, and Penn State is still in thick of things in Big Ten, but this team shooting poorly always feels like wasted opportunity.

Same result, different year. The women are even worse. I long for the days of Parkhill & Portland when we were winners.

Total embarrassment tonight. Coach Shrewsbury worst performance. Get it together guys!

Team needs a productive big. Until they recruit that position at a high level, they’ll live & die by the 3 and stay middle of the pack in the B1G.

Are we getting any calls from the refs? Never, so always an uphill battle.

Well at least we got Penn State/Iowa in wrestling on Friday.
