Fourth-seeded Penn State volleyball is moving forward in the NCAA Tournament, sweeping 13-seed UMBC in three sets before a White Out crowd at Rec Hall.

It’s the first NCAA tournament win of the Katie Schumacher-Cawley era.

Penn State (25-7) won each set by no fewer than eight points. It took the first set, 25-14, the second, 25-17 and finished off UMBC (17-9) with a 25-12 win in the third set. UMBC went up 3-1 in the third set, but Penn State quickly regrouped to go on a 6-0 run. A double block by Allie Holland and Alexa Markley sealed the win.

Penn State’s Zoe Weatherington led all players with nine kills. Teammates Kashauna Williams and Holland each had seven. Holland had a game-high eight blocks and also added six digs. Her .462 hitting percentage was the second-highest percentage of the night. Maddy Bilinovic led Penn State with nine digs, and Gillian Grimes added six. Seleisa Elisaia had 28 assists for the Nittany Lions, 15 more than any other player.

Penn State’s run continues Saturday at 6:30 against Central Florida at Rec Hall.
