Class of 2023 Penn State commit quarterback Jaxon Smolik has announced that he will sign his letter of intent on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at the Dowling Catholic High School Chapel in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Smolik (6-foot-2, 200 pounds) committed to Penn State on Aug. 12, after committing to Tulane in June. He is the number seven player in Iowa, the No. 34 quarterback, and the No. 708 player nationally, according to 247 Composite Rankings.
This past season Smolik earned First-Team All-State honors in Iowa’s Class 5A. His best performance was when he outdueled Iowa State commit and Class of 2023 four-star recruit JJ Kohl of Ankeny High School.
Smolik suffered a broken collarbone in his junior year, which affected his recruitment until he received an invite to the Elite 11 quarterback camp in June, where he impressed there and at an Elite Level Showcase in late July.
Smolik is the second Penn State commit that has confirmed that he will sign his letter of intent on Wednesday, which is the first day of the early signing period. 2023 four-star athlete Mathias Barnwell, out of Riverbend High School in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
What Smolik brings to Penn State is a potential backup quarterback to back up Drew Allar. The only scholarship quarterbacks on Penn State’s 2023 football roster are Allar, Beau Pribula, and Smolik.
