After a dramatic 4-3 win Friday night, Penn State men’s hockey ended up splitting its two-game series with Michigan State, dropping the finale, 7-3, at Pegula Ice Arena Saturday night.

Each team scored three goals in the first period. Michigan State (9-4-1, 5-2-1) kept up its scoring, scoring three goals in the second period, but Penn State (11-3, 5-3) couldn’t keep up.

Michigan State scored the game’s firs three goals. Matt Basgall got the party started 2:35 in, scoring on assists by Jesse Tucker and Tiernan Shoudy.

Sparty added on less than three minutes later on an unassisted Jeremy Davidson, and got a third less than three minutes after that courtesy of Tucker. But Penn State fought back. Christian Sarlo broke the shutout at 16:33 of the first period with Dylan Gratton on the assist. Gratton kept contributing with a power play goal at 18:57, assisted by Jarod Crespo and Carter Schade. Penn State tied it with four seconds left in the period on another power play goal, this one by Kevin Wall, with Sarlo and Ben Schoen helping.

Michigan State took back control in the second period. Karson Dorwart put Sparty back ahead 10:41 in, with assists by Shoudy and Michael Underwood. Sparty added insurance with a goal from Cole Krygier at 13:35. Dorwart and Shoudy assisted on Michigan State’s sixth goal, with Daniel Russell scoring. It added a seventh, with the game already sealed.

All three of Penn State’s losses have been in the second game of a three-game set. The team will look to get back on track Tuesday when it begins a two-game non-conference set with Alaska Fairbanks.
