Austin also has Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Oregon, Nebraska, Michigan State, and Southern California on his top eight.
Austin is a 6-1, 180-pound cornerback and kick returner that recorded 44 tackles, three interceptions, and a forced fumble on defense for Long Beach Poly High School. As a kickoff and punt returner, he averaged 45 yards on kickoff returns, 16.3 yards per punt returns, and scored three touchdowns on returns (one kickoff, two punt returns) as he helped the Jackrabbits to a berth in the California State D1A Regional Championship Game.
Austin raved about cornerbacks coach Terry Smith in a conversation discussing Penn State during his recruitment saying that โCoach Smith is a well-respected coach in college football and showed that he can develop freshman that are ready to compete at a high level.โ
Austin brings the ideal combination of size, athleticism, playmaking ability, and speed to the cornerback position. He was clocked in at a 10.82 in the 100 meters during the spring. If Austin comes to Happy Valley, he will be able to make an impact as a returner immediately while he works with Coach Smith to fulfill his full potential.
