Penn State lost a promising young linebacker for the season but may be getting another promising young linebacker back.
Days after Alex Tatsch was revealed to be out for the season, the Big Ten’s Thursday availability report listed LB Cam Smith as probable.
Smith, who, like Tatsch, was part of Penn State’s 2025 recruiting class, played in this year’s season opener against Marshall, but missed the next five games with an injury.
Coach Matt Campbell told reporters this week that Smith was trending to be available for Michigan, and the availability report confirms that, listing Smith as probable.
Also listed as probable for PSU are receiver Chase Sowell, defensive tackle Armstrong Nnodim and defensive end Yvan Kemajou.
Sowell has been the team’s top receiver since Koby Howard went down with an injury a little less than a month ago. In the three games since, Sowell has posted 70, 68 and 95 yards receiving, respectively. This past weekend against USC, Sowell played his best statistical game in his brief Penn State tenure (six games), ending with 95 yards on four catches, with one of them being a 47-yarder.
Sowell had to leave the game near the end of the first half, but returned.
It’s not clear whether Sowell being listed as probable stems from that.
As expected, Koby Howard is still listed as out.
Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser said this week that he thinks about Howard “coming back a lot.”
Penn State fans do, too.
It will be interesting to see whether Howard and Sowell make up a formidable 1-2 punch once Howard is back.
